Rupina La Pass Trek
The Rupina La Pass Trek is a lesser-known yet stunningly beautiful trekking route in Nepal. Although it is less challenging compared to other high passes, it remains relatively unpopular, with only a few trekkers completing it each year. Despite this, the trek offers an exceptional experience with its breathtaking landscapes and cultural richness. The trail passes through Barpak and Laprak, two of the largest Gurung and Ghale villages in Nepal, which were also the epicenters of the 2015 earthquake.
The trek provides superb views of the majestic Himalayan ranges, including Manaslu (8,163 m), Peak 29 (7,871 m), Himal Chuli (7,893 m), Boudha Himal (6,672 m), and the Ganesh Himal ranges. The journey is filled with diverse landscapes, wildlife, and bird species. One of the trek's main highlights is the Budha Himal and Himal Chuli glaciers, with the route crossing the Himal Chuli Glacier on the descent. Notably, there are no human settlements between Barpak and Ngyak village, offering trekkers a true sense of wilderness.
Tsum Valley
Tsum Valley is a remote and serene Tibetan Buddhist region, often regarded as one of Nepal's hidden treasures. Nestled against the backdrop of the Sringi, Ganesh, and Buddha Himal mountain ranges, this valley is rich in ancient art, culture, and religious significance. The trails are adorned with artistic chortens and mani walls—stone slabs inscribed with Buddhist prayers—leading to several unique and important monasteries.
Tsum Valley is considered a Beyul, a holy hidden valley of refuge and happiness. Traditionally, the locations of Beyuls are kept secret, with their details written on scrolls hidden in rocks, caves, monasteries, and stupas. The valley was only opened to visitors in 2008, and as a result, it remains pristine and relatively untouched by tourism.
The people of Tsum Valley are predominantly of Tibetan origin, known for their warm hospitality and simple lifestyle centered around farming, herding, and trading. The valley is also uniquely rich in wildlife, as Buddhist teachings prohibit hunting. Visitors may encounter wild mountain goats, yaks, monkeys, herds of Himalayan blue sheep, and other animals. Some describe the valley as a paradise, and it is no wonder that the name "Tsum" derives from the Tibetan word "Tsombo," meaning vivid.
Tsum Valley is often hailed as the highlight of many visitors' trips to Nepal, whether trekked independently or as part of the Manaslu Circuit.
